“Tricks Are For Kids” is a contemporary R&B breakup song about someone who has run out of reasons to stay and knows the person they’re leaving can see straight through them anyway.
Dallas singer-producer Rodney Bellinger, who records as rjtheweirdo and sits on Ty Dolla $ign’s EZMNY Records roster, released the track on 13 February 2026, writing and producing it himself.
The reflective, slow-burning soulful sound suits the subject perfectly, sparse instrumentation carrying the mood while guitar and piano shape the rhythm.
The chorus opens with what sounds like a compliment: “I could fool anyone else / With you I tell on myself.” But in the verses the real story comes out.
“I know you think you’ve been holding me down / But you’re slowing me down” and “I used to let you have it / But you started taking advantage” make clear this is someone who has already made their decision.
By the time “None of my tricks work on you” returns, it no longer feels like admiration but exhaustion.
Bellinger keeps the arrangement tight throughout so the vocals remain direct and unshielded.
