Joe McElderry started 2021 with a brand new sound on his release Baby Had Your Fun. Merging Country and Pop, it is a gloriously upbeat track brought to life in the feel-good visuals. Time has flown as it’s already over a decade since the British singer-songwriter won The X-Factor in 2009. Since then he has also won the second series of Popstar to Operastar in 2011, released an incredible five albums and played the lead of Joseph in Andrew Lloyd Webber’s production of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat.

As part of our music wellness series, we caught up with Joe McElderry to see how the Pandemic has effected him:

“I decided during the first lockdown, used to not normally having a lot of spare time and always jumping from project to project, that I would call some of my singer-songwriter friends in the industry and we would jump on Zoom calls and write with each other. I had been planning to go into the studio anyway and work and an album so I thought this was the perfect time. We did zoom calls to the USA, Denmark and other parts of the UK. The one bonus is that everybody was free and also stationary!

Just before the pandemic, I had begun writing a song called Baby Had your Fun, and I knew the minute we started it was gonna be a big uptempo feel-good banger! We finished the track over Zoom and then when regulations allowed us to go into the studio I went to London to record and we were able to shoot a music video.

For some reason being able to complete this during everything that has gone on and in such an uncertain time for the performing arts and music industry has felt really special and super creative. It has also given me something to be excited about and focus on during a scary time for us all.”

Joe McElderry’s new single and music video Baby Had Your Fun is out now and see his website for tour dates later this year.
