Jessie Ware’s “I Could Get Used To This” Is Exactly What It Needs to Be

Jessie Ware's "I Could Get Used To This" Is Exactly What It Needs to Be

Three years since That! Feels Good! and she opens her account like this.

“I Could Get Used To This” is a song about choosing to stay, about finding a lover worth surrendering to and deciding, on your own terms, not to leave. “I’ll only do it if I wanna / Got you hot under the collar” isn’t pleading. The power sits with her and she’s not moving it anywhere.

Produced by Jon Shave and Barney Lister, it moves through jazz-funk, disco, soul and house with a warmth that gets you before the groove even registers.

Cascading strings sit underneath the verses, something almost orchestral in their patience. Then the flute, bright and sharp, cutting through and placing the song in its own register entirely.

If you don’t know Jessie Ware: South London singer-songwriter who was close to walking away from music entirely before What’s Your Pleasure landed in 2020. That! Feels Good! followed in 2023, debuted at No. 3 on the UK Albums Chart, and took her to Glastonbury and Primavera.

She makes disco-adjacent pop that doesn’t apologise for being gorgeous. This is her first single since.

Ware’s voice is the thing, though. She wraps around “Pablo silhouette, Venus energy” like the line was written around the shape of her delivery, which it probably was.

The harmonies build through the chorus and stack hard in the bridge, “I’m burnin’, burnin’, burnin’ tonight” lifting into something close to gospel before the final chorus arrives. And then the key change hits without any telegraphing. Her voice just rides it. Clean.

The video, directed by Fa & Fon and built around the mythology of Juno, gives you velvet curtains, silk and chiffon, a white peacock, and Ware biting into a blood-red apple with the juice running.

Jessie Ware – “I Could Get Used To This” is out now via Interscope Records. Track 2 on forthcoming album Superbloom. Written by Jessie Ware, PHIA, Miranda Cooper & Jon Shave. Produced by Jon Shave & Barney Lister.
