Julia Calvin’s new single is it? is impossibly dreamy with a bittersweet quality complemented by gentle instrumentals drifting underneath her voice, creating a hazy backdrop. The vocals say what she desires; however, it lacks a conviction to hold onto the belief. It makes the emotions on the song highly relatable.
The song is about asking for a shoulder to lean on in a relationship, but realising it shouldn’t be too much to ask for.
I give ’em the sky
They ask for the waves
It’s really not much
To meet me halfway
Is it?
Calvin says of the song, “This song was born during a time when I was in a long-distance relationship and I wasn’t getting the reassurance I felt I needed that things were okay. It was an admission that, while I was bringing old subjects back up, I also needed to be met in the middle….This song was the beginning of standing my ground, and realizing that “I don’t wanna be a nice girl if nobody ever listens.”
The melody is hypnotic, and while it may not grab you immediately it slowly pulls you in, making it feel like a guilty pleasure.
