The new EP from Shelly Ravid is sure to put a smile on your face and get your endorphins flying as if you’ve had a hard workout at the gym, but no need for the lycra. London-based, Israeli/Swedish musician Shelly has been on the reggae scene for a while. In 2015 she collaborated with dub producer Indica Dubs and toured around Europe with their track ‘Guide You’ which was played on BBC Radio. As well as doing backing vocals for names including Earl Sixteen and Danman, and collaborating with reggae producer Alberto Blackwood (Sly & Robbie) Shelly Ravid self-released her debut EP last year, ’Let Them Know’. This year Shelly signed with New York label No Joke Records who have worked with well-known Reggae artists such as Gyptian, Vybz Kartel, Spice, Luciano, Tarrus Riley and Dennis Brown.
‘Livin’ Large’ might touch on subjects such as politics with an aim at the leader of the free world or love affairs, but it is done in such an upbeat way with such danceable beats and basslines and playful references it never weighs you down. From ‘Chain Reaction’ which has a nostalgic feel but contemporary vibe with a pop influence and when the beat gets going it pulses down through your whole body. The lyrics portray a flirty relationship and the “thrill of the chase”, it’s relatable for any human really, “your hands on my body creates a chain reaction like dominos'”. The titular song ‘Livin’ Large’ flirts with old-school reggae roots and contemporary dancehall with a sunny feel and bold instrumentals. ‘Blind 2 a Few’ and ‘Love Like Fire’ are more traditional jams with dubstep backbeats but Shelly still manages to incorporate soulful, jazzy modulations and sass so the songs always feel fresh. ‘Bullet In My Chest’ is an interesting finale as it’s more anthemic and hard-hitting lyrically, delivered with punch. Vocals manage to be emotive, syrupy sweet and strong all at the same time underpinned by a variety of groovy beats. Forget your troubles and take Shelly Ravid’s advice and live large.
Shelly Ravid’s ‘Livin’ Large’ is a fantastic prelude to her debut album released in 2018 which has been recorded in London, New York, and Jamaica with some interesting collaborators. Watch this space.
