Willis “I Think I Like When It Rains” Song Meaning, Lyrics and Why It Sounds Like Something You Forgot

Willis “I Think I Like When It Rains” Song Meaning, Lyrics and Why It Sounds Like Something You Forgot

There is a line near the top of “I Think I Like When It Rains” that most people float past without noticing: “I start to wonder why I came.” It sits inside a verse that sounds like a warm afternoon but reads like someone already halfway out the door. Willis didn’t write a rainy-day song. They wrote about what it feels like to keep returning to a version of your life that already closed without you noticing.

What “I Think I Like When It Rains” is about: The song is about someone who cannot move on from a past they still measure everything against, a time of teenage closeness, staying at a friend’s house while it rained, conversations that ran out of words long before they ran out of things to say.

Rain becomes the trigger that puts them back there. Rather than moving through the feeling, they choose to stay inside it.

Released on January 1, 2017 as part of Willis’s EP Locals 2, the song now sits at over 60 million Spotify streams and has generated more than 450,000 TikTok videos using the official audio. It went properly viral during COVID, which is not a coincidence.

A song about being frozen between past and present found its moment when millions of people were doing exactly that, scrolling backward through their phones, unsure what had changed and what they were supposed to do next.

Willis formed in Florence, Alabama, when the five members, Murphy Billings, Edward Armstead, Trey Murphy, Glenn O’Steen, and Will O’Steen, were still in high school together.

They relocated to Nashville, where they have been based for several years, but the Locals series carries the origin story in its name. Their philosophy: locality is not a postcode but a posture. Everyone who takes something from the music is a local. At 60 million streams, the reach of that idea has become hard to argue with.

Rain outside, television on, another person present. “We stayed at your place while it rains / We talk and we laugh and watch TV.”

But the verse opens with “You told me to go to the light / And what it’s like to feel your pain,” which pulls the temperature down immediately. Then: “I dreamed of things you said to me.” The construction is slightly off.

You don’t usually dream of what someone said, and that slight wrongness is worth sitting with. Memory and invention have the same texture here. Were those things actually said, or are they being reconstructed each time the rain comes? The song doesn’t clarify, and that ambiguity does quiet work.

Three words into the chorus and the song shows its hand: “I couldn’t find the words / I couldn’t think of what to say.” Willis brings this back three times, and the repetition is not a structural choice. It is the experience itself.

Whoever is singing has spent this entire relationship unable to say whatever needed saying, and still can’t, even now, even in retrospect. Back to school. Back home. Starting again. Days that ran on as though nothing would ever end.

“We party while your mom’s asleep.” That line stops the second verse cold. A third person enters suddenly, an adult upstairs unaware of what is happening in her own house.

So much of being young is defined by existing just outside adult oversight, feeling the charge of getting away with something small. The party isn’t a party because of the music or the people. It’s a party because someone doesn’t know about it. Everything felt borrowed and alive. That is what the song is grieving.

The song’s most-discussed feature is its resemblance to “Don’t Let Me Down” by The Beatles. The Reddit arguments have been running for five years.

What the debate rarely lands on: the more precise comparison is not the Beatles studio recording but Paolo Nutini’s live cover of it, which strips the arrangement to piano and voice and pulls the emotional charge into territory much closer to what Willis are doing.

A melody that sounds like it has always existed is not a liability here. You don’t score a song about the past with something that sounds brand new.

Murphy Billings sings with a rasp that sounds like it cost something. When the chorus peaks he pulls back slightly, and that pull-back is where the charge sits.

The piano line Will O’Steen plays is bright and clean and lodges somewhere you cannot name. The guitars stay in support. At 4 minutes and 38 seconds, the song earns its length by cycling through the same territory and finding it unchanged each time.

The videos that used the song on TikTok and Instagram Reels covered a range Willis could not have planned: wedding photographs, a child wandering a house his older siblings had left, Bella Hadid with friends from home.

The lyrics are skeletal enough to become yours. Willis described their process as “basically just a diary,” and the intimacy works precisely because the entries are so sparse. You fill in who else was in that room.

The song has also appeared in at least one television title sequence, though which show has gone unconfirmed across two years of Reddit threads, which says something about how this music travels.

The song’s title is hedged. Not “I like when it rains.” They think they might. That uncertainty sits inside a melody millions of people have called immediately beautiful. Willis haven’t answered it in anything they’ve made since.

WILLIS – I Think I Like When It Rains Lyrics

Verse 1

I think I like when it rains
You told me to go to the light
And what it’s like to feel your pain
Now I’m okay if you’re alright
I start to wonder why I came
I dreamed of things you said to me
We stayed at your place while it rains
We talk and we laugh and watch TV

Chorus

And I couldn’t find the words
I couldn’t think of what to say
And all that I can do is stop
And think about the days
When all we used to dream about
Was meeting after school
And we would go on home
And start right back again

Verse 2

I think I like when it rains
Call up some friends and have some fun
Oh, Lord, I wish things were the same, nowadays
We’ll go back to your place when we’re done
And I got nothing else to blame
I wish the words would come to me
We stay at your place while it rains
We party while your mom’s asleep

Chorus

And I couldn’t find the words
I couldn’t think of what to say
And all that I can do is stop
And think about the days
When all we used to dream about
Was meeting after school
And we would go on home
And start right back again
Get it, Will

Chorus

And I couldn’t find the words
I couldn’t think of what to say
And all that I can do is stop
And think about the days
When all we used to dream about
Was meeting after school
And we would go on home
And start right back again
We would go on home
And start back again
