Abby Lokelani Releases Heartbreak Ballad From The Grave
Hawaii-born singer-songwriter, Abby Lokelani, has released her new single, From the Grave, a liberating heartbreak guitar-infused ballad brimming with vulnerability.
The indie pop track combines electronic production with guitar and piano infectious melodies and the delicate vocals by Abby Lokelani that evoke heartfelt feelings of raw intimacy.
From the Grave is a very touching and emotional song beautifully written and performed.
“From the Grave” is the ultimate heartbreak anthem. This song is meant to be sung at the top of your lungs, while screaming, crying or dancing, and thinking about someone who broke your heart. When the chorus comes around you hear:
Won’t you take my ashes to the ocean
Let me live out in the open
With the blue waves
No one will hear when I scream your name
No one will hear the pain
You can just say, there’s a ghost to blame
The song was written by Abby Lokelani and produced by Jake Finch (who has notably worked with artists like Lucy Dacus and Bre Kennedy)
Abby told Neon Music exclusively about her new release, “I wrote ‘From the Grave’ in November 2021 while living in Boston and studying at Berklee College of Music. The seasons always impact my emotions a lot, and shape what I write. November is a really dark time and cold month in New England. I was also going through a difficult break-up at the time (the kind where you still love the person and everything is strung out). ‘From the Grave’ was written from a place of totally letting go and giving into that excruciating feeling of heart break. Writing and singing this song was so therapeutic and it really became my medicine song for a while.
The ocean has always been so special to me, and represents this feeling of freedom. “Take my ashes to the ocean, let me live out in the open. With the blue waves, no one will hear when I scream your name, no one will hear the pain.” Those lyrics in the chorus were written from a very sad place, but every time I sing them I am always overcome with this feeling of release and freedom. I knew that I had to find the right person to help me bring this song to life, and the producer I worked with, Jake Finch was able to do that like no one else.
I wanted ‘From the Grave’ to stand apart from other heart break songs; especially because the nature of it’s emotional origins were so complicated.
With ‘From the Grave’ I was able to write a heart-break anthem that is uplifting while tapping into serious pain. (You can even hear me screaming at the end, which I knew from the beginning had to be a part of the song for it to be authentic!)”
From the Grave is out now.
