SOUKOU’s Bloodline Is An Intensely Personal Ode To Overcoming Intergenerational Trauma

By Marcus AdetolaFebruary 26, 2023
SOUKOU's Bloodline Is An Intensely Personal Ode To Overcoming Intergenerational Trauma

In her hauntingly beautiful new single bloodline, SOUKOU explores the pain and regret of family histories filled with intergenerational trauma. The song’s stripped-down arrangement, delicate harmonies, and heartfelt vocals are set against a lush atmospheric soundscape that evokes a sense of longing and introspection, expressing myriads of emotions and feelings that are often difficult to put into words.

The track eventually builds up to a more upbeat ballad but still carries the weight of the past. Despite the sad themes, a healing quality grows as the song progresses, marking a turning point in SOUKOU’s life where she finally understands that not every struggle belongs to her and that she can let go to heal.

From her upcoming EP, which explores the different ideas, angles, and stories of family constellations, bloodline is a deeply personal ode to overcoming the pain of the past. It tells the story of SOUKOU’s grandparents, who survived the war, her parents, who tried to make love work, and the constant racism faced by black people in Germany. Through it all, SOUKOU finds a way to make something good out of the pain, creating a track that is emotionally resonant and a triumph of personal growth and healing.
