YAYA by Black Sherif – A Raw Dive into Resilience and Reality

By Marcus AdetolaAugust 12, 2023

Black Sherif returns with a thought-provoking duo of songs, Simmer Down and YAYA, unveiled on August 10, 2023, with the creative touch of Joker Nharnah.

From the opening notes, the rhythmic chant YAYA KK captivates, immersing listeners in a realm where tenacity confronts the real world. YAYA, which means “take it easy” in Twi, a language from Ghana, emerges as a beacon of optimism in the midst of life’s turbulence.

Through his lyrics, Black Sherif offers a window into his experiences. The ‘jungle’ he alludes to isn’t merely symbolic; it mirrors the tough circumstances many encounter. He touches upon the unforgiving streets, betrayals, and the uphill battle of perseverance, echoing feelings familiar to many.

However, the narrative isn’t solely about hardships. A segment of the song offers a refreshing pause, a moment of reflection, and spiritual bonding. Black Sherif’s affinity for Rastafarianism is evident as he talks about seeking comfort in cannabis, a means to confront his inner battles. The phrase “Rastafari with love and peace” signifies the quest for serenity in chaos.

The memorable refrain of YAYA stands out. More than just a catchy sequence, it beckons listeners to pause, to seek solace by the sea, to embrace the gentle wind, and to momentarily set aside life’s burdens. It serves as a nudge that even amidst the grind, joy is within reach.

Delving further, the lyrics explore Black Sherif’s personal challenges, from grappling with dependencies to being perceived as the head of a “muugu clan”, a band of outsiders. The candidness in his words, paired with the infectious rhythm, ensures an engaging experience for the audience.

YAYA mirrors the essence of Black Sherif. It charts the peaks and troughs, the joys and sorrows, and the battles and triumphs. Rich in metaphor, linguistic flair, and colloquialisms, the song is both entertaining and insightful.
