Parts & Spares Turn Family Jam into Folk-Pop Gold with Scream When You Cry
Sometimes the best songs take a village – or in this case, a family. London’s Parts & Spares might be fresh faces (formed September 2023), but their debut single Scream When You Cry feels like it’s been simmering for ages. Mainly because it has.
Writer-guitarist Luther Jones had the melody bouncing around his head for years before his daughter Frida and her girlfriend Kaisha McGroarty helped unlock its potential. Talk about keeping talent in the family.
The song starts softly, with gentle guitar work that gradually unfolds into something special.
Under the surface, a steady drumbeat anchors everything while dreamy soundscapes drift through the mix.
Then Frida steps in, her voice soars in all the right places, especially during those moments before each chorus that’ll have your arms covered in tiny bumps.
The lyrics paint scenes of basement conversations and street-side crowds, while the chorus (“Heard you scream when you cry”) cuts straight to the emotional core.
By the time the full rhythmic arrangement kicks in during the final third, you’re completely wrapped up in their world.
Not bad for a melody that almost got away.

Parts & Spares Scream When You Cry Lyrics
Your mother’s in the basement.
She’s going through her going through her life.
The doctors say she’s crazy.
She’s wasted all her time.
And the walls are getting closer.
There’s space up in the light.
She can hear the traffic hang around,
Where the lovers came round earlier tonight.
Heard you scream when you cry.
You fight with your eyes.
There’s a letter on the side,
And a call came through tonight.
Saying shoot on sight.
No, my aim’s not right.
Oh, I’m just killing time,
There’s a hole in every one of us tonight.
The neighbour’s called the police again.
There’s a crowd gathered outside.
They sealed off the building,
Now they’re looking for a crime.
And I’m out here taking pictures.
I’m just trying to feel alive.
There’s a guy selling his dreams for a place up at the front of the line.
Heard you scream when you cry.
You fight with your eyes.
There’s a letter on the side,
And a call came through tonight.
Saying shoot on sight.
No, my aim’s not right,
And I’m just killing time,
There’s a hole in every one of us tonight.
Shoot on sight.
No, my aim’s not right,
There’s a hole in every one of us tonight.
Ahhhhh
Shoot on sight.
No, my aim’s not right.
And I’m just killing time
There’s a hole in every one of us tonight.
There’s a hole in every one of us tonight.
