néomí’s It’s Never Easy (Leaving Someone Behind) Is a Soft-Spoken Storm of Farewell and Self-Recovery

Surinamese-Dutch folk-pop artist néomí returns with It’s Never Easy (Leaving Someone Behind), a gentle yet unflinching portrait of emotional detachment.
Drenched in atmospheric textures, the track opens in hushed restraint before slowly expanding—layer by layer—into a well-bodied chorus where acoustic fingerpicking meets subtle string flourishes.
“It’s about the grief you feel for leaving someone behind in life, even though it might be the right thing to do. It is always hard, and it’s never easy to go in different paths. If you’ve loved someone for such a long time you can become ‘one’, you have to give up a whole identity to break that apart. I wrote this song as a reminder that time will ease the pain, as long as you just move on and make good choices for yourself. And especially if you don’t forget who you are as a person yourself,” néomí explains.
Her voice trembles on lines like “So you sit and you lose / I know that she still feels like you,” tracing the aftermath of parting ways with someone so intertwined they’ve become a mirror.
The production—anchored by minimal percussion and haunting vocal harmonies—lets silence echo as loud as sound. Nothing feels rushed.
The space between chords gives the song its shape, as néomí honours both sorrow and selfhood.
The surrealist video, directed by Dirkje Duwel, visualises the internal distortion: being an alien in your own home.
It’s a fitting counterpart to a track built on fractured identity and quiet resolve.
Pulled last-minute into her upcoming EP Another Year Will Pass (out 31 October), It’s Never Easy feels like a necessary whisper from the eye of the storm.

néomí It’s Never Easy (Leaving Someone Behind) Lyrics
Verse 1
Something’s lost, something’s gained
I’d like to take it Joni’s way
I think she’s right, it’s not a waste
It’s just choices that are hard to make
Chorus
So you sit and you lose
I know that she still feels like you
But time will tell you how to ease it
You said, “Baby, come undone”
It’s been this way all along
It’s never easy leaving someone behind
Verse 2
The soil you crave is finished
There’s no growing left to bloom
The earth ran dry, no tears to cry
Left here for the gloom
So my feathers died, petrified
That I’ll turn back into blue
Chorus
So you sit and you lose
I know that she still feels like you
But time will tell you how to ease it
You said, “Baby, come undone”
It’s been this way all along
It’s never easy leaving someone
Bridge
Behind, you leave it all behind
Feels like you’ve been blind to all the things that justify
Who you’ve been and what is on your mind
It’s giving time, but who am I to tell you what is right?
Behind, you leave it all behind
Outro
So I sit and I lose
I pray that he will feel like you
Hope that time will tell me how to ease it
I know I’ve said, “Come undone”
I really tried it all along
It’s never easy leaving someone behind
