UK rap dynamos Krept & Konan slide into winter with a decidedly summery flex on Smooth Lovin, roping in dancehall heavyweight Popcaan for a sultry cross-cultural jam.
It’s their first release since 2019’s Revenge Is Sweet, and the duo’s got something to prove with their upcoming Young Kingz II album.
P2J’s production work here is clever, building on the blueprint that made G Love pop, he crafts a groove that feels both nostalgic and fresh.
The beat sways between Afrobeat patterns and Caribbean rhythms without forcing either style to compromise its identity.
Konan opens with a playful verse about late nights and potential romance, dropping references to Salt Bae while maintaining his signature wordplay.
Krept follows through with some slick bars about cultural connections, switching between references to plantain that work for both his Caribbean and African admirers.
But it’s Popcaan who provides the secret sauce here. His hooks are catchy, acting as the glue that binds the track’s various elements together.
When he croons “smooth lovin’, baby don’t you want some cool runnings,” it feels less like a feature and more like he’s been part of the crew all along.
Director Harry Guest captures the track’s laid-back vibe in the accompanying visuals, which were filmed during the duo’s month-long recording stint in Jamaica.
The video grounds the song in its cultural roots while showcasing the natural chemistry between the collaborators.
The track marks an interesting pivot for Krept & Konan. Having already smashed records (they’re still the first British rap act to headline London’s O2), they could’ve played it safe.
Instead, they’ve opted to dig deeper into their roots, recording parts of their upcoming album in Jamaica.
Smooth Lovin suggests that Krept & Konan aren’t just making music for the charts—they’re creating something that honours their heritage while pushing their sound forward.
If this is what independent Krept & Konan sounds like, their upcoming album might be their most authentic work yet.
