Dempsey Bolton’s Sequel: A Cathartic Banger for Moving On

Dempsey Bolton’s Sequel is a rollercoaster ride with a catchy bop through the wreckage of misplaced affection.

He kicks things off with a dreamy piano intro that’s almost too pretty, but don’t be fooled.

Before you know it, you’re plunged into a maelstrom of slick guitars and heart-thumping drums.

The production is clever, marrying old-school rock vibes with modern pop polish, complementing his vocals as he switches from soft verses to choruses that capture the emotional turmoil.

The lyrics are sharp, carving out snapshots of a relationship gone bad. “You text me next week just in time for your lonely phase.”

However, it’s not some sad boy anthem that keeps you wallowing in defeat; rather, it’s cathartic—the musical equivalent of burning your ex’s letters while doing the Electric Slide.

Dempsey Bolton’s backstory in the song adds some spice to the mix. He’s taken his personal dumpster fire and turned it into audio gold.

“I wrote it about a relationship I had where I was so invested and so down to ride with this person but they only gave me attention when it was convenient. It was a very isolating and lonely experience and every time I was ready to leave they would give me just enough of a reason to stay. Kind of a bummer tbh so I wanted to take the experience and make a really fun track out of it. The chorus just kind of fell out of me and I produced it in a few hours. Other parts like the big 2nd prechorus (which has some of my favourite synths I’ve ever made) took a lot longer. Ultimately though, I just wanted something super punchy and fun to contrast how jaded the lyric is. I think it’s a good song to scream-sing in the car, and hopefully it helps someone move on haha”

It’s relatable without being cliche, a neat trick in today’s oversaturated pop landscape.

Sequel isn’t just for the recently dumped. It’s for anyone who’s ever felt like a backup plan, a convenience, or a doormat.

It’s a wake-up call wrapped in a banger, telling you to know your worth and ditch the dead weight.

Dempsey Bolton Sequel Lyrics

Don’t look away
We could be over it
Yeah I could escape
But you pull me closer when I get distant

And I get distant when I call you twice on a Friday
And I get your voicemail with pics on your story
You text me next week just in time for your lonely phase
Out of control and now I have corralling to do

Why am i always the fool
Just when I’m over and through
You hit me out of the blue
I catch you coping with the

Stiff drink like you pour highs for a living
Karma knocking at your door
Beg me to hear your lies for a minute
But I came prepared

Yeah i been wishing on stars that won’t ever fall down
Banking on friends that don’t ever come round
Should’ve known then what I figured out now

I tore my heart out for you
And there was never a sequel planned
No second chances are due
I’ve given every piece I can
And all I’m left with are
Wasted years of my precious time
Left it all on the line
I tore my heart out for you
And there was never a sequel planned

Don’t say a word
Cause you’ll only poison me
Yeah, loving you hurts
But you pull me closer when I get distant

And I get distant a lot now it’s almost a reflex
Hearing your name makes me feel like a reject
Lately the good is becoming infrequent
And I got this question that’s slowly been creeping into

Why am i always the fool
Just when I’m over and through
You hit me out of the blue
I catch you coping with the

Stiff drink like you pour highs for a living
Karma knocking at your door
Beg me to hear your lies for a minute
But I came prepared

Yeah i been wishing on stars that won’t ever fall down
Banking on friends that don’t ever come round
Should’ve known then what I figured out now

I tore my heart out for you
And there was never a sequel planned
No second chances are due
I’ve given every piece I can
And all I’m left with are
Wasted years of my precious time
Left it all on the line
I tore my heart out for you
And there was never a sequel planned
