Dionne Bromfield is known for previously co-presenting CBBC Friday Download, having positive features across The Guardian, The Independent and NME amongst others and now continuing the late Amy Winehouse’s musical style of neo-soul legacy with the release of her latest single ‘Can’t Unlove You’.

The 22-year-old introduces her carefully developed sound with hints of early-era Paloma Faith layers of vocal harmonies and tails of Winehouse vibrato with this devastating love song which expresses her inability to move on a past love.

Speaking on the track, Dionne Bromfield states: “‘Can’t Unlove You’ came from me not being able to sleep at 4 am and over thinking about a guy who I was really in love with but knew it was wrong from the get-go – that it would never work. It’s about trying to come to terms with the fact that no matter how much I try to forget you and us, I just can’t.

‘Can’t Unlove You’ unleashes old school soul from Bromfield using carefully measured electric guitar and light sounds of piano sailing her along the lyrics of the song. Later into the recording of light drums, there is the focus on the tapping of the hi-hat, acquainted with pursuing the rest of the song down a more edged and structured road.

Lyrically, Bromfield grasps at the acceptance of the break-up during the bridge of the song “Guess I gotta thank you for the memories you gave me boy, truth is that we really need to leave the past and move right on”. Straightforward and fair words many people will relate to, great mindfulness of past times but a harsh acknowledgement that circumstances change and life moves on.

Her first release of 2018 is an instant vindication for Dionne Bromfield’s true, timeless sound. She is ready to get back into the spotlight, and if ‘Can’t Unlove You’ is anything to go by, you’ll be hearing a lot more about her in 2018.
