A Name You Won’t Forget – Exclusive Interview With Parker Polhill

By Lucy LernerSeptember 28, 2018
Parker Polhill

Parker Polhill

You just have to listen to a few seconds of Parker Polhill’s new single ‘No Talk Tonight’ to realise he is on to a winner. It’s not just his name that is memorable but his songs are insanely catchy too.

‘No Talk Tonight’ is airy and crisp, the epitome of contemporary pop with subtle elements of electronica, RnB and kaleidoscopic tones. Parker’s nectar vocals have a commanding allure.

Music was always a passion for Parker Polhill and he started out in the music industry performing at Eddie’s Attic in his hometown of Atlanta Georgia. It was a venue where artists such as Justin Bieber, John Mayer, and Sugarland regularly performed and cultivated their fans. Parker moved to Nashville to study audio engineering at Dark Horse Recording Studios which was also used by artists including Taylor Swift and Keith Urban.

Parker has just completed a national tour and is now in the studio writing new music. Originally from Atlanta, he now splits his time between recording studios in Los Angeles and Phoenix.

Neon Music caught up with Parker Polhill prior to his addictive new release.

Tell me about your new single ‘No Talk Tonight’.
Everyone has that one person they miss/want to talk to but know they shouldn’t. “No Talk Tonight” is a song I wrote with two friends of mine that explains how I went about “not talking” to an ex of mine… 😉

What is inspiring you musically at the moment?
Life! My friendships, relationships, and experiences are where I find the inspiration for the music I write. I like to write about things I’ve learned in life so far also. I’m just a kid from Atlanta trying to spread and inspire positive energy. Positive energy is just as contagious as negative energy! Show someone you love them!

What are your thoughts on the Pop/R&B landscape and where it’s at right now? Where do you think you fit in?
I think pop music is in a great spot. Rap/ Hip-Hop is really hot right now and I love it! Might be the Atlanta in me but I love everything about the music on the charts right now. I think before this year (2018) we had a bit of a drought, but this year has been a great one for music.

Do you remember the first record you ever bought?
The first album I remember buying is Nelly’s album ‘Suit’. “It’s all in my head, I think about it, over and over again…” Oooo that album had some bangers.

What would people be surprised to learn about you?
If you would’ve asked me that five years ago, I’d say not many people knew I sang lol.

The up-and-coming artist you love the most is…?
I’ve been listening to Bazzi & 6lack a lot. 6lack’s new album is a full project; I can listen to that all the way through. Bazzi just released his debut album this year and I think it’s pretty great also. Both are pretty big, but definitely still on the come up!

Top 5 tracks of 2018?
In no particular order:
‘Psycho’ by Post Malone
‘Eastside’ by Benny Blanco, Halsey, Khalid
‘Number’ by Ty Dolla $ign
‘Hopeless Romantic’ by Wiz Khalifa, Swae Lee
‘NC-17 or WAKE UP’ on Travis Scott’s Astroworld album
& I forgot some great songs from this year I’m sure.

What do you find are the challenges of being in the music industry?
I think the hardest thing to do as an artist is to stay consistently motivated. It’s a big game of hurry up and wait in the music industry. You write a banger and you don’t get to release the song for a long time. You’ve gotta stay patient and motivated even though you won’t see the success until later on. That’s probably my biggest challenge: having all this great music I want to share with the world but having to wait to make sure everything is planned out and set up for the release to do the best it can.

How much time do you spend on social media per day?
I don’t know, but wayyy too much! I enjoy it, but I think everyone is looking at their phones too much. Myself included.

If you weren’t in music, what else do you think you would be doing?
I’m an entrepreneur so I probably would’ve run with one of my business ideas and started a company. Honestly, I have no idea though haha.

What’s a typical day for Parker Polhill?
During the week I wake up, hit breakfast, work on whatever song I’m on at the time, lunch, then work on music & hit the gym at some point. On the weekend, College & NFL games! I just moved out West and some games literally start at 9:00 am now lol…

Who would play you in a movie and why?
Mark Wahlberg. He’s a great actor and he’s hilarious. I think I’m funny so it works hahahaa.

You have released a lot of great singles this year – what’s next?
Album!! “No Talk Tonight” is my last single for the year and next year I’ll be releasing my debut album. I’ve been working really hard on it. Not quite done with it yet, but I’m getting close! Will be done very soon! 2019 is album year!
