It’s Only The Beginning For RnB Sensation Chris Grey

By Terry GuyDecember 31, 2018
Chris Grey

Chris GreyIt’s looking like Canada has its own new R&B sensation, in the form of Toronto’s talented Hip-Hop producer and Pop songwriter Chris Grey, who showcases a diverse batch of musical styles on his new 4-track E.P “The Beginning.”

Kicking off with a Synth banger which delivers Industrial-esque drum programming, easily comparable to the epic sound of Zayn’s 2016 hit single “Pillowtalk,” Grey’s “When I’m Gone” sends us into Eurodance bliss with the help of a hypnotic melody performed via a keyboard sound reminiscent of the late Brainbug’s distinctive hook from his remix of 1998’s “The Age Of Love.” A fiery way to begin Grey’s debut, he brings about an unexpected Rock vibe as soon as the chorus drops via that demonic distortion effect on his Drake-like vocal, an overall music production easily comparable to the work of The Weeknd.

“Unusual” takes you on a less harsh journey but is still, nevertheless, a trippy number which at times unpredictably throw you back to the mid-tempo, Pop-Reggae rhythms of Riri’s 2011 single “You Da One.” And trust Neon Music when we say that Grey’s nasal-sounding voice will send shivers down your spine, and you will for sure be rocking out to that masterfully performed Electric guitar solo in Unusual’s finale, the same way we all went crazy to MJ’s 1988 smash hit single “Dirty Diana.” Track 3 “Give,” the E.P’s “dream” Ballad, will relax every bone in your body, the same way Usher has done previously with his Slow Jam beats and filtered synths, an overall understated piece of music which you will find yourself instantly repeating again because of Grey’s calm vocals.

“The Beginning” comes to a close with “Goodbye” an unexpected, relentless burst of Electro Rock anger, as opposed to the bittersweet, sombre number you may have been expecting. The best way to end an accomplished piece of musical works is by unleashing the beast, and Grey does not fail us one bit. A great debut, well worth the listen, this is definitely “The Beginning” of a great career for the Canadian singer and songwriter. Don’t be surprised if you see Chris Grey in the songwriting credits for a future Justin Bieber hit very soon. From all of us at Neon Music…Chris Grey, thank you for delivering a memorable debut.
