Phlox by Luna Keller x Thomas LaVine Is a Quiet Bloom Worth Noticing

By Marcus AdetolaJune 3, 2025

Written during Luna Keller’s visit to North Carolina, Phlox unfolds like a memory you don’t want to explain—just relive.

What begins with soft, fingerpicked guitar slowly expands into something far more intricate: ambient textures, layered harmonies, and the vinyl-like warmth of a moment preserved.

Recorded in LaVine’s home studio, the song captures the quiet pulse of their first in-person writing session after years of remote friendship.

“Phlox is like a grounding reminder that not everything needs a deeper meaning or answer,” Keller reflects.

The lyric “Smell the meadow phlox there so you know / The scent of southern air before you go” isn’t just poetic—it’s immersive.

You can almost hear the dusk settling in. There’s a richness in the vocal blend, like two perspectives gently circling the same thought.

LaVine notes, “Writing with someone else may mean you don’t always walk the same part of the path… but we were just trying to amplify that in each other.”

In Phlox, every note feels gently placed, like petals carried by memory — delicate but impossible to forget.

Luna Keller x Thomas LaVine Phlox Lyrics

There’s a valley where the wildflowers grow
all the longing takes me back
there’s a sorrow in the undertone
of a slowly fading past
broken pieces coloured glass

Smell the meadow phlox there so you know
the scent of southern air down where they grow
whisky never tasted good to me
but if that’s what you’ll have that’s what I’ll drink

Sink my feet into the shallow shore
if I walk will it get deep?
it might pull me in the undertow
maybe that’s just what I need
when it’s dark can I go back?

Smell the meadow phlox there so I know
the scent of southern air down where they grow
whisky never tasted good to me
but if that’s what you’ll have that’s what I’ll drink

Smell the meadow phlox there so you know
the scent of southern air before you go
