JOY’s self-produced 2015 EP, ‘ODE’, has been streamed over 5 million times with Beats1 pioneer Zane Lowe stating that the 20-year-old Australian is one to watch. Alongside this, JOY has completed a sold-out Australian tour, multiple festivals and was a supporting act for R&B star Kehlani during her Australian tour in 2017. As of 2018, she was also a supporting act for Demi Lovato during her TMYLM European Tour promoting her new EP ‘Six’. Her soft melodies and ambient tone juxtaposed the arena we were sitting in. It was inspiring to watch her be able to captivate 20,000 people who really had never heard of the singer, multi-instrumentalist, and producer before. Halfway through the set, JOY started to explain that it was through listening to ‘Dreams’ by Fleetwood Mac that enlightened her passion for music, in particular through the art of songwriting. She then went into a stripped back version of ‘Dreams’ in which showed her vocal ability as well as her pure talent for music composition. Afterward, she began to share her new single ‘Change’ as well as previous songs such as ‘Smoke Too Much’ and ‘Like Home’ before she ended her set. With more than 400,000 monthly listeners on Spotify to date and more tours prepared for, I think we will be seeing a lot more of JOY in the future.
