While we’re careful not to spoil any of the film’s key twists or technical intricacies, what we can share is that Kravitz’s debut is set to be a thought-provoking exploration of power, desire, and the hidden darkness lurking beneath the surface of paradise.

Premise

At the heart of Blink Twice is the story of Frida, a cocktail waitress whose life takes an unexpected turn when she becomes infatuated with Slater King, a magnetic tech billionaire.

Slater invites Frida into his world, whisking her away to his private island—a luxurious escape where reality seems to bend and twist.

What starts as a dreamlike weekend of indulgence quickly morphs into something far more sinister.

As strange and unsettling events begin to unfold, Frida is forced to question everything she thought she knew.

Blink Twice dives deep into the murky waters of power dynamics, temptation, and the lengths one will go to unearth the truth, even when it comes at a steep cost.

Inception and Evolution

The journey of Blink Twice began in 2017 under a different working title, “Pussy Island.”

Kravitz, who started writing the script before the #MeToo movement shook Hollywood, found that the changing social landscape deeply influenced her story.

Reflecting on this evolution, Kravitz mentioned in a 2022 interview, “I started writing it pre–Me Too, pre–Harvey [Weinstein]. Then the world started to have the conversation, so [the script] changed a lot. It became more about a power struggle and what that power struggle means.”

This transformation is evident in the film’s narrative, which tackles timely themes with a fresh perspective.

Directorial Debut and Production Journey

Kravitz’s directorial debut with Blink Twice marks a significant milestone in her career, showcasing her ability to not only act but also helm a complex, multi-layered story.

The project officially came to life in June 2021, when Kravitz announced she would direct the film, co-writing the script with E.T. Feigenbaum.

The announcement generated significant buzz, particularly with the news that Channing Tatum would play the enigmatic Slater King.

The road to making Blink Twice was not without its hurdles. Kravitz candidly shared with Entertainment Weekly, “There were a lot of roadblocks along the way, whether it be the MPAA not wanting to put it on a poster, a billboard, or a kiosk; movie theatres not wanting to put it on a ticket.”

Despite these challenges, Kravitz persevered, assembling an exceptional cast and crew who were equally passionate about bringing this story to life.

Filming took place in the stunning locales of Yucatán and Quintana Roo, Mexico, beginning on June 23, 2022.

Kravitz surrounded herself with a talented team, including cinematographer Adam Newport-Berra, editor Kathryn J. Schubert, and composer Chanda Dancy, all of whom contributed to the film’s distinctive aesthetic and mood.

Ensemble Cast and Characters

Blink Twice boasts an ensemble cast brimming with talent, with each actor bringing depth and nuance to their roles.

Naomi Ackie, fresh from her powerful portrayal of Whitney Houston in I Wanna Dance with Somebody, plays Frida, the protagonist whose world unravels on Slater’s island.

Channing Tatum, known for his versatility, steps into the role of Slater King, infusing the character with charm and mystery.

Alia Shawkat, Christian Slater, and Simon Rex add layers to the narrative with their respective roles, making the film’s world feel lived-in and unpredictable.

Adria Arjona, Haley Joel Osment, and the legendary Geena Davis round out the cast, each bringing their unique energy to the story.

The characters they portray are as compelling as they are complex, ensuring that audiences will be invested in their fates from start to finish.

Release and Distribution

After a highly anticipated premiere at the DGA Theatre in Los Angeles on August 8, 2024, Blink Twice is poised to make waves in theatres across the globe.

The film will be distributed in the United States by Amazon MGM Studios under the Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer banner starting August 23, 2024.

Warner Bros. Pictures will oversee the international release, set to begin on August 21, 2024.

Critical Reception

Though the film has yet to reach general audiences, early reviews suggest that Blink Twice is living up to the hype.

The film has garnered a 78% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, with critics praising its provocative themes and Kravitz’s confident direction.

Metacritic’s score of 77 out of 100 echoes these sentiments, indicating that Kravitz’s debut is already striking a chord with those who’ve seen it.

Behind the Scenes: A Collaborative Effort

Blink Twice is a product of collaboration, with Kravitz working closely with a skilled crew to bring her vision to the screen.

The cinematography by Adam Newport-Berra captures the island’s beauty and underlying menace, while Kathryn J. Schubert’s editing ensures the story’s tension remains taut.

Composer Chanda Dancy’s score adds an extra layer of psychological depth, making the audience feel every twist and turn.

The production design by Roberto Bonelli and art direction by Derek A. Hecker Diaz also deserve mention, as they crafted the world of Blink Twice with meticulous attention to detail, enhancing the film’s eerie atmosphere.

Costume designer Kiersten Hargroder further amplified the characters’ identities through her thoughtful wardrobe choices.

Marketing and Promotion

The buildup to Blink Twice has been just as intriguing as the film itself.

Trailers and teasers have offered tantalising glimpses into the world Kravitz has created, sparking curiosity and conversation.

The marketing campaign has smartly played on the anticipation surrounding Kravitz’s directorial debut, along with the star-studded cast, to generate buzz and excitement.

Cultural Impact and Themes

By tackling themes of power, exploitation, and the dark side of human nature, the movie resonates deeply in today’s society.

Zoë Kravitz’s Blink Twice is shaping up to be a cinematic experience that challenges and captivates.

With its intriguing premise, a cast of characters that draw you in, and a narrative that refuses to play it safe, this psychological thriller is one to watch.

As we eagerly await its release, one thing is clear: Blink Twice is a film that dares to push boundaries and explore the darker corners of human desire.
