On Sapling, Scottish singer-songwriter Tommy Ashby crafts an acoustic reflection that feels grounded yet searching, carried by earthy fingerstyle guitar and a voice that leans into vulnerability without hesitation.

“This song is about having someone who even in our most vulnerable moments is there to support,” Ashby reflects, and the sentiment hums softly beneath every finger-plucked note.

The arrangement is uncluttered, letting each chord breathe around lyrics that reach for meaning in life’s tender pauses.

“If I sink or swim / lose or win / will you walk with me, honeybee?” lands like an earnest invitation, underscored by soft melodic turns that hold steady rather than shy away.

Recorded live in a moment of creative instinct, Ashby chose to keep the original take. “There was a spark of energy in this early version that I couldn’t replicate later,” he explains.

That choice lends Sapling a lived-in warmth, capturing the delicate grit of a song growing quietly but assuredly.

Closing his upcoming album Mantis, Sapling plants itself in trust, offering a gentle resilience that feels lasting.

Tommy Ashby Sapling Lyrics

Dark ringed sapling
A child of winter
Seek light, don’t hide
Your changing colours

If I sink or swim
Lose or win
If I tell you all my dreams
Will you walk with me
Honeybee
Will you tell me what they mean

Wild flowers, like towers
Grow all around you
Eyes closed, you doze
I felt the earth move

If I sink or swim
Lose or win
If I tell you all my dreams
Will you walk with me
Honeybee
Will you tell me what they mean

Rough night, hold tight
I can’t stop crying
You stay, always
I’m never doubting

If I sink or swim
Lose or win
If I tell you all my dreams
Will you walk with me
Honeybee
Will you tell me what they mean

If I sink or swim
Lose or win
If I tell you all my dreams
Will you walk with me
Honeybee
Will you tell me what they mean
Will you show me what they mean
Will you tell me what they mean
