Taylor Swift’s Enchanted Lyrics Unpacked: A Glimpse Into What Was Never Said

<p>Taylor Swift’s “Enchanted” explores love at first sight, lyrical mystery, and the silence that followed.</p>

Taylor Swift has written confessions disguised as choruses before, but Enchanted is different.

It doesn’t whisper a secret so much as preserve one. Released on 25 October 2010 as part of Speak Now, an album she wrote entirely solo, the song is a ballad caught between awe and regret.

Swift co-produced it with Nathan Chapman. Its blend of acoustic guitar and ambient rock atmosphere moves between country, pop, and something closer to fantasy folk.

The song has resurfaced again and again. First as a fan favourite. Then a viral TikTok sound.

And most recently as Enchanted (Taylor’s Version), a standout on the 2023 re-recording of Speak Now that re-entered the Billboard Hot 100 at No. 39.

The lyric video has since surpassed 73 million views on YouTube, fuelled by fan nostalgia and viral trends.

But long before it became a streaming phenomenon, it was simply about a single moment with a stranger.

In a 2010 Target interview, Swift explained, “I started writing this song about a guy I was enchanted to meet, obviously.” She added, “I got home and he had e-mailed me and said something like, ‘Sorry I was so quiet. I was just wonderstruck meeting you.’ And so I incorporated the word wonderstruck into the song.”

That boy, later confirmed by fans to be Owl City’s Adam Young, publicly responded in 2011 by posting his own version of Enchanted on Valentine’s Day.

In it, he adjusted the lyrics to directly address Taylor: “I was enchanted to meet you too.”

While Swift never publicly responded to his rendition, the interaction has become a part of Swiftie lore.

The original lyric booklet for Speak Now even featured a hidden acrostic that spelled “ADAM” under the track.

And yet, Enchanted isn’t really about Adam. Not anymore.

Its opening lines paint the backdrop: a tired social scene, forced smiles, a loneliness she’s trying not to show. Then, something changes.

“Your eyes whispered, ‘Have we met?’”

That moment breaks the song’s emotional hush. The lyrics shift from distant politeness to fragile hope.

Each verse paints the scene with delicate strokes. Intimate, cinematic, and quietly building. Swift doesn’t rush to the chorus. She tiptoes into it, letting that single encounter become something mythic.

“This night is sparkling, don’t you let it go
I’m wonderstruck, blushing all the way home”

“Wonderstruck,” borrowed from that now-famous email, becomes the lyrical centrepiece. Youthful, sincere, and too personal to fabricate.

But unlike her later works, where love often comes with complications, Enchanted lives in a suspended state of maybe.

Online, fans echo that feeling. One Reddit commenter described it as: “The perfect song for when you’re falling for someone at the wrong time and can’t do anything about it.”

On YouTube, a top comment on the lyric video reads:

“This song captures that split second when a stranger makes you feel everything, and then you just… never see them again.”

Another wrote:

Enchanted makes me feel like I’m 16 and seeing someone I’ll never talk to again but will think about for years.”

As the song swells into its later verses, Swift subtly shifts from enchantment to ache.

“Please don’t be in love with someone else
Please don’t have somebody waiting on you”

That plea is where the fantasy fractures. She’s still on the train ride home, blushing. But the doubt has crept in. Not because anything bad happened. Only because nothing really did.

There’s no official music video, but Swift’s Eras Tour performances have visually brought the song to life. Ballgowns. Cathedral lighting. Glitter raining from above.

In these moments, it becomes something mythic. Not just about one moment, but everyone’s moment of almost.

And Taylor has kept it that way. She’s never added more context. Never turned it into something concrete. In the liner notes and re-recording, she leaves the story unfinished.

Swift never answered Adam Young. And maybe that silence became the point. Enchanted doesn’t ask to be returned. It asks to be remembered.

So here’s what’s left hanging in the glitter-dusted air:
If you knew someone was enchanted to meet you, would it change what you did next?

Verse 1
There I was again tonight
Forcing laughter, faking smiles
Same old tired, lonely place
Walls of insincerity
Shifting eyes and vacancy
Vanished when I saw your face
All I can say is it was enchanting to meet you

Verse 2
Your eyes whispered, “Have we met?”
Across the room, your silhouette
Starts to make its way to me
The playful conversation starts
Counter all your quick remarks
Like passing notes in secrecy
And it was enchanting to meet you
All I can say is I was enchanted to meet you

Chorus
This night is sparklin’, don’t you let it go
I’m wonderstruck, blushin’ all the way home
I’ll spend forever wonderin’ if you knew
I was enchanted to meet you

Verse 3
The lingering question kept me up
2AM, who do you love?
I wonder ’til I’m wide awake
And now, I’m pacing back and forth
Wishing you were at my door
I’d open up and you would say
“Hey, it was enchanting to meet you”
All I know is I was enchanted to meet you

Chorus
This night is sparklin’, don’t you let it go
I’m wonderstruck, blushin’ all the way home
I’ll spend forever wonderin’ if you knew
This night is flawless, don’t you let it go
I’m wonderstruck, dancing around all alone
I’ll spend forever wonderin’ if you knew
I was enchanted to meet you

Bridge
This is me praying that
This was the very first page
Not where the storyline ends
My thoughts will echo your name
Until I see you again
These are the words I held back
As I was leaving too soon
I was enchanted to meet you
Please, don’t be in love with someone else
Please, don’t have somebody waiting on you
Please, don’t be in love with someone else (Ooh)
Please, don’t have somebody waiting on you (Ooh, oh)

Chorus
This night is sparklin’, don’t you let it go
I’m wonderstruck, blushin’ all the way home
I’ll spend forever wonderin’ if you knew
This night is flawless (Please, don’t be in love with someone else)
Don’t you let it go
I’m wonderstruck (Please, don’t have somebody waiting on you)
Dancing around all alone
I’ll spend forever (Please, don’t be in love with someone else)
Wonderin’ if you knew
I was enchanted to meet you

Outro
Please, don’t be in love with someone else
Please, don’t have somebody waiting on you
