Sunflower Thieves How Was America: When Friendship Ghosts Come Back to Haunt

Sunflower Thieves How Was America: When Friendship Ghosts Come Back to Haunt

Sunflower Thieves’ How Was America dives headfirst into the murky waters of a friendship gone adrift.

The Leeds duo serves up a slice of life that’s as raw as it is relatable, blending dreamy soundscapes with lyrics sharp enough to cut.

Sunflower Thieves How Was America song cover

At first listen, you might be fooled by the dreamy soundscape. But pay attention to the lyrics, and you’ll find yourself transported to that awkward reunion we’ve all dreaded.

You know the one where you’re face-to-face with someone who used to know your deepest secrets, now reduced to small talk and forced smiles.

Lily Sturt-Bolshaw and Amy Illingworth have a knack for capturing those squirm-inducing moments.

Take the opening lines: “You look familiar, but I don’t know you / Feels like just yesterday, you’d gone.”

It’s spot-on, nailing that weird disconnect when someone who was once your world now feels like a stranger.

The chorus is where things get really interesting. “Now you’re looking right at me like everything’s okay / A psychopath smile in the corner of the room.”

We’ve all faked a smile while dying inside. It sucks, it’s painfully real, and Sunflower Thieves nail it.

How Was America balances raw emotion with its dreamy production.

This track is just a taste of what’s to come on their EP “Same Blood,” and it’s got me intrigued.

If Sunflower Thieves can keep delivering this level of emotional truth-telling, they’re definitely ones to watch.

This song isn’t your typical earworm; it’s more like that nagging thought you can’t shake, set to a deceptively mellow tune.

Sunflower Thieves have crafted something that feels less like a song and more like eavesdropping on someone’s therapy session.

This track doesn’t play nice. It’s not here to make you feel good about your social skills or your ability to maintain friendships.

Instead, it’s the musical equivalent of that friend who calls you out on your BS—uncomfortable but necessary.

The duo’s knack for layering dreamy sounds over knife-edge lyrics is impressive.

It’s like they’re inviting you to a cosy blanket fort, only to start an intervention once you’re inside.

It’s sneaky, it’s smart, and it’s bound to leave you feeling a bit raw.

Sunflower Thieves How Was America Lyrics

You look familiar, but I don’t know you
Feels like just yesterday, you’d gone
How was America and how’s the band?
Heard that you broke it up, that’s sad

I thought you were dead
Lying out cold after losing your head
All these years I’ve spent
Losing sleep

Radio silence, for four years and some days
I could’ve killed you, when you didn’t call
Funny when you told my friends, you were lonely
I guess you only got what you deserved

Now you’re looking right at me like everything’s okay
A psychopath smile in the corner of the room
But I miss what we were
And that’s just why it hurts

Now you’re looking right at me like everything’s okay
A psychopath smile in the corner of the room
But I miss what we were
And that’s just why it hurts

Now you’re looking to me to make everything okay
A broken down smile in the corner of the room
Guess you got what you deserved
