Holding On by Frances Whitney Embraces Nostalgia with A Melodic Blend of Country and Indie Folk
Country-esque music is having a moment again. Frances Whitney is presenting her brand-new track Holding On which is in harmony with this exact vibe.
The track sounds like it was plucked straight out of an episode of Gilmore Girls and is a beautiful piece about the act of loving someone and finding it easy to be with them in their presence but finding it hard to hold onto them forever.
Whitney was born and raised in San Francisco, California originally, and started her career as a professional volleyball player before committing to her true passion; songwriting.
She takes inspiration from an array of 70s Los Angeles rockstars and creates her own unique blend of rock, country and indie folk music that is both timeless and magical.
The sound truly whisks you away to a world of its own where you can escape in the bliss of the beat.
Holding On is Whitney’s second release after her initial debut Easy Street.
For this new track, she has united with producers 254Bodi (Feid, Roddy Ricch, Chris Brown), Bash (Kid Cudi, Roddy Ricch, A Boogie), Fitz (Feid, Rod Wave, Boslen) & Clarke (Kid Cudi, Lil Yachty, Ty Dolla $ign)
The group have collaboratively produced a stunning song which manages to merge the two worlds of retro and new age to create something candidly unique.
When speaking about Holding On Frances Whitney states; “I wrote Holding On about dating a fellow creative – which was profound, inspiring, and completely unsustainable. In the song, there’s an interpolation of Don Henley’s lyric about his romance with Stevie Nicks – “I was either standing in your shadow or blocking your light” – which summed up how well how I felt in the aftermath. Ultimately, Holding On is about connecting deeply with someone for a season, knowing it won’t last.”
Holding On is a captivating release and one that will certainly be a great addition to your Summer soundtrack.

Frances Whitney – Holding On Lyrics
In all your dreams the world is ending
And you’re the one saving us
Is that why you like me so much?
On some guardian angel stuff?
Next stop on your hero’s journey: Tokyo
I picture you writing poems on a bullet train
And I Know, they’re not about me but you sent me a postcard
Holding you is easy
But holding on is too hard
Holding you is easy
But holding on is too hard
You say your dad loves Tom Waits
But I thought this was an Eagles song
You say “See, there’s so many things that we can show each other”
But I can’t think of a single one
I got nothing to teach you
That you don’t already know
The cover band sings to me on Bleecker Street
I’m either “standing in his shadow or I’m blocking his light”
Who is whose muse if we’re both rockstars?
Holding you is easy
But holding on is too hard
Holding you is easy
But holding on’s tryin’ to fall back asleep into a dream that slipped away
Oooh
Aaah
Mmmh
Aaah – ah
You’re gonna swallow me whole
After I crawl into your mouth
Then I’ll expand ’til I explode
Destroy you from the inside out
How romantically morose
Holding you is easy
But holding on is too hard
Holding you is easy
But holding on is too hard
Holding you is easy but thank God it’s too hard
Holding you is easy but thank God it’s too hard
