Sometimes we have to give in to temptations and allow ourselves to indulge and this song demonstrates just that. “When I’m with him, I’m thinking about you” is how the song opens, perfectly setting the pace for the story that is about to unfold. Courtney Jenae sings about her desire to ‘have her cake and eat it too’ the age-old phrase describes wanting to have it both ways and, in this case, it’s about being happy in your relationship but wanting a little bit extra from someone else.

‘Messy’ is the latest single from music musical duo YVR made up of songwriting, married couple Courtney Jenae and Stephen Stahl (Wondrboy). Jenae takes the lead vocally whilst Wondrboy is in charge of the production making them the perfect team. Between the two of them, they have managed to forge a signature and recognisable style. An upbeat pop melody on top of a trap beat aka the ‘K-POP’ sound that they had a role in shaping. Initially, the pair began writing as a way to make money and pay bills but as their love for writing grew, they took a step towards the spotlight and created YVR.

The duo has the ability to take a song about wanting to cheat and turn it into something relatable. The lyric “I hope you don’t cry over spilled milk” flips all your initially ideas and you want to be on the side of the singer. You are compelled to feel empathy as a listener because undoubtedly there has been a time in your life you’ve had an itch you just couldn’t scratch and essentially that is what the song is about.

Songwriting has brought YVR success to the couple and their careers, hopefully being musical artists will do the same for them.
