Daste’s Colours: A Sun-Soaked Sonic Palette

Daste's Colours: A Sun-Soaked Sonic Palette

Australian trio Daste deliver a summery earworm with their latest single, Colours.

This indie-pop offering seamlessly blends catchy hooks with thoughtful lyricism.

The song’s structure is straightforward yet effective. The chorus, with its simple refrain of “Feel the sunshine / paint the colours of your eyes,” sets a positive tone that carries throughout the piece.

Despite not being groundbreaking, the delivery of this imagery is sincere enough to resonate.

In the verses, Daste explores emotional states through colour metaphors.

Lines like “Greyish clouds got me feeling blue”might seem familiar, but the band’s delivery gives them new life.

The second verse shifts focus, delving into relationship dynamics with more direct language.

This change in approach adds depth to the song’s narrative.

Musically, Colours summery production creates an uplifting atmosphere, enhanced by well-placed saxophone lines from collaborator Jim Alxndr.

These elements work together to support the song’s optimistic message.

Daste cites the UK band Easy Life as an influence, and this inspiration is evident in their lyrical approach.

“Easy Life inspired me to think outside the box with lyrics. Braxton added a new verse and vocals, really providing the ‘colour’ it needed. The song has grown into a love-injected utopia where everything is saturated in colours. We were blessed to collaborate with Jim Alxndr on saxophone and the final mix.” ~ Callum MacDonald (of daste.)

However, Colours maintains its own identity, showcasing Daste’s ability to craft a distinct sound within the indie-pop landscape.

While some listeners might find certain lyrics overly straightforward, the overall effect is a song that’s both accessible and emotionally resonant.

Colours is a solid offering from Daste; it balances catchy pop sensibilities with more nuanced songwriting, resulting in a track that’s likely to appeal to both casual listeners and indie-pop enthusiasts.

Daste have announced that they have a few Australian shows planned for August before heading off to North America for their debut headline tour throughout September/October.

Chorus
Feel the sunshine
Paint the colours of your eyes
Situation
Tells the story of your life

Verse 1
Greyish clouds, got me feeling blue
Rain at night, what picture do I choose
Laying down on the couch it’s me and you
Counting sheep, we’ll lay here till we sleep

Chorus
Feel the sunshine
Paint the colours of your eyes
Situation
Tells the story of your life

Verse 2
I don’t wanna mess up what we had
Think about the times, the times we had
Checkin my phone, see that you called
I just want to give you something to hold
How bout’ my heart, how bout’ my soul
All that I give, comes back tenfold
I found my way, I found my light
Everything I see comes through so bright
Got that

Chorus
Sunshine, sunshine, sunshine
Paints the colours of your eyes
Situation
Tells the story of your life
