Yves’ Soap (feat. PinkPantheress) opens not with a beat, but with a jolt of déjà vu.
The sugar-water-slick sample from Rebecca Black’s “Sugar Water Cyanide” slips in like a half-remembered dream.
It is the kind of sonic cue that makes pop obsessives freeze mid-scroll, knowing something unexpected is about to happen.
Within seconds, the track moves into a Miami-bass bounce, Yves’ voice airy yet assertive, and PinkPantheress sliding in like a co-conspirator.
The collaboration’s origins trace back to November 2024, when Yves mentioned in a fancall that working with PinkPantheress was a dream.
Producer IOAH anchored the track, with co-writing from Rebecca Black, PinkPantheress, HYNGSN, MABOKPIL, Jesse Saint John, Nightfeelings, and 0JV3.
Released August 7, 2025, as part of Yves’ third EP Soft Error, Soap is the first official pairing between the two artists and the first time Yves has incorporated a Rebecca Black sample into her work.
On paper, it is a crossover tailored for the digital pop generation. In practice, the music video plays with contrasts.
There are tightly choreographed set pieces, looser handheld street shots, treadmill walks that seem plugged into nothing, and sudden disappearances and returns that feel like flickers of thought.
American singer Rebecca Black also appears in the music video, adding a direct visual link to the track’s sample.
PinkPantheress does not appear in person, a detail fans noticed instantly, with some joking she must have been “busy shopping at Zara.”
The lyrics move between English and Korean, sketching a rejection of control and the reclaiming of self after an unnamed antagonist.
PinkPantheress’ verse turns the focus back on the other person with lines like “You’re so rock and roll, now get your camera / I don’t like you, I don’t want to be part of your show” while Yves’ chorus circles around defiance and liberation with “Woke up in my freedom.”
Fan reactions have been split between euphoria and reservation. On Reddit’s r/popheads, one listener claimed they “ascended” when the opening sample hit, while another marveled at the surreal nature of Yves, PinkPantheress, and Rebecca Black all being part of the same song.
Others wished the track was longer, noting its sub-three-minute runtime leaves it ending just as it locks into its groove.
YouTube comments described Yves’ on-screen presence as “calm and trusting” and called the track perfect for a “Friday night drive to the city.”
Critics have been equally divided. The Bias List labeled it “style over substance” and argued that while the early-2000s bounce and minimal melodies are fashionable, they recycle familiar trends without delivering a strong hook.
Some fans pointed out that Yves’ English delivery can be difficult to follow, while others defended her increasingly hyperpop-inspired direction as one of the most exciting in current K-pop.
Part of the pull of Soap lies in that divide. It is a song built from fragments, a borrowed hook, a feature that exists only in the audio, verses that slide between languages, and a mood that feels both icy and inviting.
Whether that feels intoxicating or incomplete depends on how much you value atmosphere over resolution.
It leaves the question hanging: if this is Yves’ version of a “soft error,” what might her system sound like at full, unrestrained glitch?
