Watch new music video ‘Breakout’, the first single from MALKA’s upcoming album. MALKA, aka Tamara Schlesinger, the acclaimed songwriter and front-woman of alt-folk collective 6 Day Riot. Her first album as MALKA, ‘Marching To Another Beat’ was released in 2015 to rave reviews. She plays all the instruments on the record herself as well as co-producing her music.
‘Breakout’ is a colourful video where MALKA is dancing; adorned in glittering sequins, pink hair, sparkling eye makeup and metallic lips. The song is very upbeat with a sweet melody despite the theme being about overcoming adversity.
MALKA says of the music video for ‘Breakout’, “This video was a real collaborative effort with my longtime team and video director Lee Bamsey,” she explains. “The intention was to portray a feeling of how I am as a live performer, we came up with a strong visual style and dance routine, which I choreographed with some friends of mine, to create lots of movement and atmosphere.”
MALKA’s past work has been included in a selection of high-profile syncs for TV series and Hollywood films including Skins, Scream 4 and 127 Hours and recently Degrassi Next Class and MTV’s Catfish. Her voice can also be heard singing “These Boots Are Made For Walking” in the background of Lock, Stock & Two Smoking Barrels.
Since her first album, MALKA has become a favourite of BBC 6 Music and has gained big support from Lauren Laverne, who recently featured her previous single ‘Wonder Why’ in her ‘Best Of 2016’ playlist. Huw Stephens at Radio 1 is a big supporter of MALKA. Her forthcoming second album is bound to be as thought-provoking as the rest of her music. She says, “The new album has a lot of political references – it is impossible to sit back and see what is happening with the plight of refugees, the dismantling of the NHS and the political changes in the UK and US and not feel affected. This single is about hope, striving for a better life and believing/dreaming that things might change.”
